In the early days of web-based technology,
English was often claimed to be ‘the language of the internet’.
This is no longer the case. The proportion of English used on the
internet has dropped dramatically over the past decade, from 51%
2000, to just 29 % in 2009. Chinese has almost caught up with
English, and Russian and Spanish are becoming increasingly
prominent. Multiple language choice is therefore becoming an
increasingly common feature of corporate websites.
The computer gaming industry has also
experienced huge amounts of growth over the last few years, and the
demand to tailor software or hardware for local markets mean
s that language skills are in increasing
demand. Whether you’re designing games that fit in with different
cultures around the world, or simply providing subtitles for games
already on the market, your languages could be a great asset in
this sector.
Watch this video from MYLO, the exciting
new online learning resource for languages. This Spanish challenge
shows how language skills can help break into new markets in the
computer gaming industry.
