Secondary teachers work with children between
the ages of eleven and eighteen. It is useful for potential
teachers of modern languages to have skills in two languages.
Lesser taught languages such as Russian or Urdu can be very useful
if offered alongside the most commonly taught languages – French,
German and Spanish.
For a career in post-16 language teaching a
high level of competence is needed in the language you wish to
teach. It’s also a statutory requirement for new entrants to FE
teaching in England to be teacher trained and to have a recognised
teaching qualification. There is a range of PGCE courses for the
post-compulsory sector.
