Finding a job

Finding a job

In addition to recruitment and careers services, there are several organisations that can help you find work with languages in the UK. In this section we advise you on research and finding the right organisation. Directories of Bilateral Chambers of Commerce – i.e. Chambers of Commerce representing different countries in the UK – can be a good starting point if you want to find companies that need language skills.

General tips

It is not realistic to expect to use your languages all the time unless working as a specialist linguist like a translator or a language teacher. A CV should therefore include a balance between language skills and other skills, experience and qualifications that may be relevant to the employer. Care should be taken not to over-emphasise language knowledge unless you are applying for a specialist language occupation. Even translators and interpreters need to show specialist industry experience and qualifications. It is also well known that employers take on linguists for skills beyond language ability. Remember that languages will have helped to develop skills in general communication, cultural awareness, independence, summarising, proof-reading and many other areas.
