Central government
UK politics and foreign politics are inextricably linked these days. Government departments and agencies across Whitehall, all need staff who can use foreign languages, at home and abroad, and who are aware of and sensitive to cultural differences. Whether your job is helping shape EU policy on the environment, helping UK tourists overseas in a crisis or gathering information in the fight against organised international crime - language skills make a big difference. Many government departments have excellent provision for learning a language on the job - especially at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London where the UK's diplomats work - when they are not on a job overseas.
