Languages at work - Construction and the built environment

Construction and the built environment

Two million people are employed in construction industries in the UK, doing around 700 different types of job. Like many other industries, construction is becoming increasingly multinational, both in the composition of the workforce and in the reach of its markets. On the one hand, there is a need to keep up with international developments in a fast-evolving industry; on the other, with an increasing dependence on migrant labour, managers and supervisors need to be able to rise to the challenge of co-ordinating a multilingual workforce. There will be plenty of opportunities, now and in the future, for people with language skills and intercultural awareness.
