Languages at work - Engineering

Engineering

The international dimension is vitally important to the UK ’s engineering industry, yet there is a shortage of people who can combine technical skills with competence in another language. A survey of future demand amongst engineering companies (2003) showed a need for a diverse range of languages including Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese (particularly for new markets in Latin America ) and Central European languages.

Talking of the shortage of engineering graduates, CBI deputy director-general John Cridland said "Our future success will depend on our ability to compete not only with our traditional international rivals but new ones too, particularly India and China." (May 2007)
