Languages at work - Health and social care

Health and social care

Two million people are employed in Health and Social Care professions in the UK. Good communication with patients, clients and colleagues is paramount and as our society becomes increasingly multilingual, the ability to communicate in other languages becomes important at all levels, from support workers to consultants. Whether it is supporting elderly patients with little knowledge of English, helping those who have only recently arrived in the UK or developing practice in relation to international issues such as bird flu or tropical diseases, languages can play a part and are increasingly valued by the NHS and other employers.
