Background

Left school with 5 O-Levels with no language qualifications. After leaving school gained a series of profesional qualifications as well as learning German and Spanish.

Why is Spanish important for your job?
Being able to converse in Spanish has enabled me to source products from some of the cutting edge regions before they hit the mainstream. There is no doubt that our portfolio would not be as extensive as it is now without this commercial advantage.

How do languages come into play?
Although many companies have people who can converse in English I believe that the relationship becomes much closer when you can converse with all departments in their own language. It is not just a question of the language but understanding the culture and the way that business is conducted which helps when trading in other countries.

How would you describe your job?
My job can be very exciting especially when researching new products in new regions. Spain in particular has evolved tremendously in the last 20 years and it has been great to be involved in that development.

What kind of skills and qualities do you need?
A very open mind and a willingless to learn very quickly.

What about outside work?
Learning another language has helped me tremendously with my business but also on the personal side has opened up lots of new friendships and opportunities in Spain.
