Background

French learned at work - NVQ Level One1 - through attending weekly lectures

What are your main responsibilities at work? How are languages used in everyday tasks, involving writing, speaking, reading, listening?
My job involves project managing the introduction of new products being supplied to Nissan from first tier suppliers, as well as inventory control and expediting. My language is mainly used when attending meetings at French suppliers (during formal introductions) and also when speaking and listening to delivery drivers when expediting products from France.

Have languages helped you get on?
They have certainly helped in forming relationships with our French suppliers.

Why are languages important in your job?
The job involves regular communication with European suppliers, and not all our contacts there speak fluent English so any degree of language ability can assist communication. When expediting deliveries it is essential to be able to speak in the driver’s native tongue in order to gather information.

Which languages and countries are important?
France and Spain are the most common supply areas although Nissan’s supplier base covers most European countries. Japanese is important for employees who are seconded to the parent company.

How did your past experience help you in your job now?
A previous occupation involved travelling and meeting people so it gave me an insight into foreign cultures and their different outlooks on life.

What tips would you give to anyone interested in using their languages in your area?
Don’t assume that because you can speak a language that the person on the receiving end of the conversation can understand you, or that you can understand them! Always confirm important parts of the discussion.
