Support from the family

Support from the family

Parents and children need access to up-to-date advice and information about languages in order to offer support and make the right decisions.

Languages Work resources
Materials in our Activity folder for schools encourage parents to get involved in their child’s language learning. Ask the languages teacher or careers teacher about this. There is more information on our products page.

You could also download our factsheets, which provide information for younger and older students on languages and careers.

ATLAS project
The ATLAS project (A Taste for Languages at School), points out that parental help and encouragement is an important factor in language learning. The project also suggest that older siblings can provide encouragement based on their own experiences of language learning and that family members who live abroad can provide motivation to learn and use the language in order to communicate, in person or by telephone, email and text.

The Parent Centre
The DCSF has a website specifically designed to tell parents and carers what they need to know about education and how they can get involved. There is also a Parents and Schools magazine. The local Connexions office and your children’s teachers can also provide advice on specific questions about language learning.
