Castile y Leon

 

The autonomous region of Castile y Leon is the largest in Spain, and famous for its diversity of natural spaces, and beautiful, historic towns.

 

Located in the north-west of Spain, the region is bordered by Asturias and Cantabria in the north, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon, Castile-La Mancha and Madrid in the east, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha in the south; and Portugal and Galicia in the west.

Castile y Leon’s mountain ranges, natural spaces, rivers, valleys, caves, gorges, and extensive plains make it an incredible landscape to explore.

 

Things to do in this region include:

  • Hiking in the Gredos mountains
  • Canoeing or fishing on the Duero river
  • Mountain biking along the Camino de Santiago
  • Walking in one of the region’s 40 natural parks

Castile y Leon contains many historical towns, including Spain’s oldest university town, Salamanca, and the region’s largest town, Leon, where you can find some of the best tapas in Spain!

 

Highlights include:

  • The plaza mayor in Salamanca
  • The Roman aqueduct in Segovia
  • The Gothic cathedral in Leon
  • The castles of Castile
  • Stone Age relics in Atapuerca.
