Study options
Nearly everyone studies at least one foreign between the ages of 11 and 14. Which ones you get to study depends on the languages your school has chosen to offer. If you are at a Specialist Language College you may have a very wide range to choose from. Every language is different as is every country where the language is spoken - remember you get to learn about the culture, food, music and lifestyle of the people who speak the language as well as the language itself! You can find out more about all this under Culture.
In year 9 you will probably have to make a decision about your options. Remember that languages work really well with other subjects – they give you more opportunities later on to work around the world and with different groups of people, whatever profession you want to get into.
You should get support in making your decisions for Key Stage 4, through careers and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) teachers, as well as Connexions Personal Advisers.
