Construction

 

Like many other industries construction is becoming increasingly multinational, both in the composition of the workforce and in the reach of its markets. There will be plenty of opportunities, now and in the future, for people with language skills and intercultural awareness.

 

1. On a building site, one worker shouts to another: ‘Duck!’ What did he mean and how would you translate this into a language you are learning? How else might this message have been communicated? Why is good communication important?

 

    2. Here is an important message you might see in different languages. Do you know what it means? Can you tell which languages are which?

      They are all being carried out by the same Spanish company – Ferrovial. In June 2006, Ferrovial bought British Airports Authority. It also has a big stake in the London Underground.
